About the Job
Akamai Systems Communications group is looking for a talented Senior Performance Engineer to be responsible for ensuring the systems Akamai uses to safely operate our network are performing well. A successful performance engineer will define and drive projects to measure and improve performance of these systems over time. This will involve developing tools and processes to collect and analyze performance-related data and proposing/implementing ways to make improvements. Engineers in this role will be part of the team that designs and builds these systems and will be involved in the process of successfully managing existing systems as well as new features.
About the Team
Akamai’s Systems Communications (SysComm) is a talented cross-functional group of engineers that builds and runs the fault-tolerant and highly scalable infrastructure that supports Akamai's global network. This distributed infrastructure includes configuration management systems, networks security systems, and monitoring systems for all Akamai's machines running across the world.
Responsibilities:
* Define metrics for tracking system performance and drive these systems to meet those metrics
* Respond to incidents, but more importantly, prevent incidents through active analysis and monitoring
* Troubleshoot complex network issues, service incidents, performance issues, and availability issues
* Develop the skills as an expert operator of these systems and an expert at applying Akamai's technologies to the problems we need to solve.
* Provide expertise to engineering and operations teams on the use of these systems
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in engineering, math, science or equivalent experience
* Minimum of 5 years experience with Linux/Unix environment
* Minimum of 5 years experience with computer networking
Desired Qualifications
* Masters or Ph.D. in engineering, math or science.
* Excellent communication skills
* Strong attention to detail and excellent problem solving/troubleshooting skills
* Good organizational and personal project management skills
* Experience working with TCP/IP, UDP, DNS, HTTP, and SSL protocols
* Experience monitoring systems and applications for performance
* Experience analyzing and optimizing complex distributed systems
* Experience with principles of software development and design
* Experience with programming or scripting in any language
* Experience with databases and SQL
