About the Job
We are seeking an experienced, talented and highly motivated Linux kernel software engineer to join our expanding team. You will be responsible for the Linux kernel, the foundation of the Akamai software stack. Our kernel engineers develop and enhance the Linux kernel components that are critical to the Akamai business. You will work on our most challenging problems, diagnosing core problems, and building innovative high quality solutions that are secure, scalable, and reliable. You will collaborate with internal Akamai teams and the Open Source community to improve the Linux Kernel. Your software will enable key Akamai products and will affect people all over the world. Kernel engineers create new kernel features from scratch and enhance existing kernel features for our massively distributed network. You will work on projects that make our network more scalable, faster, and secure. You will drive development from conception to design, implementation to testing, and deployment to maintenance. You will also work with engineering support to troubleshoot complex problems on our network.

About the Team
The Kernel Engineering team provides the Linux kernel innovation in the Akamai global distributed network composed of over 140,000 servers, 1000 networks, and 91 countries. We push Linux to its limits and beyond. The Kernel Engineering team is part of the larger Platform Infrastructure Engineering team that develops and supports the Linux kernel, operating system, security, communications and data collection infrastructure common across the distributed network. The Kernel team is responsible for developing, building, testing, debugging and deploying the Linux kernel. We’re an innovative team that makes things happen quickly. Responsibilities:

* Extend and customize the Linux kernel for Akamai product specific needs
* Make the Linux kernel faster (network stack, scheduler, I/O, file system, etc.)
* Improve kernel resiliency (security, hardware failures, etc.)
* Add new hardware and technology support to the Linux kernel
* Debug complex system problems
* Work with the open source community

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other technical discipline
* Minimum 5 years C programming experience within the Linux kernel (preferably on x86)

Desired Qualifications
* Strong understanding of network protocols including IP, UDP and TCP
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Proficiency with Perl and Python
* Experience with distributed systems
* Experience with system provisioning frameworks
* Experience with automated test frameworks and automated test case creation
* Prior contributions to the Open Source community
