About the Job
Akamai Systems Communications group is looking for a talented Senior System Performance Engineer to be responsible for ensuring the systems Akamai uses to safely operate our network are performing well. A successful performance engineer will define and drive projects to measure and improve performance of these systems over time. This will involve developing tools and processes to collect and analyze performance-related data and proposing/implementing ways to make improvements. Engineers in this role will be part of the team that designs and builds these systems and will be involved in the process of successfully managing existing systems as well as new features.
About the Team
Syscomm is a cross-functional engineering team that develops the distributed systems that underpin Akamai's global network. This team develops configuration management systems, networks security systems and distributed systems that manage and monitor Akamai's distributed network. These systems operate behind the scenes and are either completely automated systems or are used by Akamai's network operations staff to manage the network. They run 24x7 to keep the system safe and secure.
Responsibilities:
* Work closely with Development teams in designing/implementing Performance enhancements and new features
* Develop monitoring tools and automate processes to help scale our systems better
* Define metrics for tracking system performance and drive these systems to meet those metrics
* Respond to incidents, but more importantly; prevent incidents through predictive modeling and active analysis
* Troubleshoot complex application issues, service incidents, performance and availability issues
* Interact with Customer Support, Professional Services, Program Management and other organizations across the company to provide insights about the new feature introductions and enhancements
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in engineering, math, science or related field
* Minimum 5 years of experience with Linux/Unix environment and computer networking
* Minimum 5 years of experience with programming or scripting in any language (Python a plus)
Desired Qualifications
* Masters and 2 years of equivalent experience or Ph.D. in engineering, math or science.
* Experience working with web services and API’s a big plus (SOAP & REST)
* Experience working with TCP/IP, UDP, DNS, HTTP protocols
* Experience implementing state-of-the-art large-scale machine learning algorithms for parallel/distributed systems (C, C++, Java, Python)
* Familiarity with SQL, Python and Linux shell scripts a big plus
* General knowledge of the following categories of network systems: Multiprocessing, Threading, Distributed systems, Load Balancing and High Availability
