About the Job
Service Performance is the Akamai group with end-to-end responsibility for ensuring our services are performing well. A well-performing service, in addition to being fast and available, also needs to be robust and well-operated. Service Performance Team members need to have very strong communication skills to enable them to work across all areas of the company (especially engineering, operations, networking, and technical services).
About the Team
The Akamai Mapping control system is the heart of the platform used to deliver secure, high-performing services over the Internet to any device, anywhere. It reaches globally and delivers locally, providing the ubiquity required to scale reliably and to adapt quickly to changes. The Mapping Engineering team’s software systems and operational controls direct traffic for Akamai's globally distributed network of servers.
Performance engineers within Mapping Engineering have a deep technical understanding of the Internet, enjoy taking a holistic view of complex systems, and have analysis capabilities and knowledge that are critical to the management of the mapping control system. This team works closely with other development and performance engineering departments across the company to plan and conduct analysis, optimize performance, and design system enhancements that ensure that Akamai’s systems operate effectively and optimally when globally deployed.
Responsibilities:
*Become an expert in understanding Akamai’s complex distributed system
*Create tools that are used to operate this distributed system more efficiently
*Have a passion for operations research in order to have a strong understanding of how to improve processes
*Write scripts to manage data as well as monitor and automate processes.
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in engineering, math, computer science or equivalent field.
* 5+ years of professional experience.
* 3+ years experience with Linux/Unix environment.
* 3+ years experience with one or more of the following languages: Ruby, PHP, CGI scripting, MapReduce, Hadoop
Desired Qualifications
* Masters or Ph.D. in engineering, math or science.
* Experience analyzing and optimizing complex distributed systems.
* Experience with databases and SQL.
* Experience with big data technologies a plus.
* Excellent communication skills.
* Good organizational and personal project management skills.
* Experience with computer networking.
* Experience monitoring systems and applications for performance.
