Overview:About the Team
Our seasoned team of networking professionals designs and operates Akamai’s corporate voice and data networks. We build and configure all routers, switches, firewalls, and voice systems that carry our global enterprise traffic, and are responsible for the stability, security, and performance of our corporate WAN. We design and maintain a complex network of 600+ devices, and are responsible for the planning, configuration, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of our corporate LANs and WAN.
About the Job
As a Network Engineer you will configure and upgrade routers and switches, monitor and troubleshoot a wide array of network devices, and assist in documenting new and existing systems and procedures. You will work closely with our Telecom team to support our voice and videoconferencing efforts, and will work with other internal teams (e.g. Windows, Unix, DBA) to support our user and server requirements.
Responsibilities:
We are looking for someone who possesses a solid understanding of networking technologies, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to learn quickly in a fast-paced environment. Your diverse technical skill set should be complimented by a team-first attitude and excellent interpersonal skills, and you should be willing to rack and cable equipment, and available to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation. You must be an organized self-starter capable of delivering assigned projects and tasks on time with minimal supervision.
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience
* 3+ years experience managing and troubleshooting Cisco and/or Juniper routers and switches
* 2+ years experience managing basic network security devices (e.g. firewalls, VPN concentrators). Juniper firewall/VPN experience highly preferred.
* 1+ years experience utilizing advanced network troubleshooting tools (Netscout, Fluke, etc.)
Desired Qualifications
* Understanding of voice and videoconferencing systems and related technologies
* Experience interfacing with Network Monitoring systems and Linux command line tools
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Strong background in configuration and administration of Cisco- and Juniper-based network environments
* Strong background in Ethernet networking technologies (including, VLANs, VLAN aggregation, 802.1Q, Spanning Tree, LACP, PAgP) and network security concepts
* Understanding of end-to-end data flows and traffic patterns
* Excellent understanding of Internet technologies (e.g. HTTP, DNS, SMTP)
* Advanced knowledge of client-based networking with systems running Windows, Mac OSX, or Linux
* The ability to install and configure equipment, including the ability to lift at least 30 lbs.
